John A. Cammarata, M.D. of Wayne died at age 55 on Friday, December 21, 2001 at home receiving the loving care of his family.

He was born in Passaic and lived in East Rutherford before moving to Kinnelon and then Wayne.  He attended Saint Mary’s RC Church in Pompton Lakes.

He received his formal education at Bergen Catholic High School graduating with the Class of 1964.  He then went on to Saint Peter's College in Jersey City, graduating with a B.S. in Biology in 1968.  Two years later, he received his Masters Degree in Medical Science at Rutgers University Medical School in Piscataway.  He went on to receive his Medical Doctor Degree at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City with the Class of 1972.

He served his residency in Internal Medicine at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center in Bronx, NY and became Chief Oncology Resident.  After leaving Montefiore, he was associated with Chilton Memorial Hospital, and worked with Drs. Shalit and Anish in Wayne, as an internist specializing in oncology.  He then left the group and opened a private practice in Wayne until 1986, when he opened his Weight Control and Nutrition office in Clifton.

He also served for many years as medical director of Northeast Life Skills outpatient program for heroin addiction treatment.

His book, “A Physician’s Guide to Herbal Wellness”, was published in 1996 by the Chicago Review Press.  He had numerous interviews on TV and radio, including NBC and Fox News.  He has also been quoted in the print media, including Cosmopolitan and GQ, and his book is a recommended text at the University of Georgia.

Dr. Cammarata was known for his boundless determination, his keen intellect, and his empathetic bedside manner.  He enjoyed travel, playing golf, and the arts, as both an accomplished keyboardist and amateur apinter.  He was a highly spiritual man, and particularly loved his yearly retreat to the Loyola Retreat House.

Surviving are his loving wife of nine years Kathleen Rogers Cammarata; two sons Aaron Cammarata and his wife Ilona of Teaneck and Joel Cammarata of Oakland, California; one stepson Gregg Thompson of Chicago, Illinois; one stepdaughter Lynn Thompson of Chicago, Illinois; his loving parents Anthony and Margaret Cammarata of East Rutherford; one sister Linda Cammarata of West Caldwell.

Funeral services were held Thursday, December 27, 2001 from the Vander May Wayne Colonial Funeral Home, 567 Ratzer Road, Wayne then to Saint Mary's RC Church in Pompton Lakes where a Funeral Mass was offered. Entombment was in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover.
